Sarah Blackstone (video-introduction, 6:35)

Sarah W. Blackstone, Ph.D. is the president of Augmentative Communication Inc. in Monterey, CA and a participant in the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Communication Enhancement, a NIDRR funded program. Dr. Blackstone currently is co-chair of the Patient-Provider website and forum.

Amy Wilson-Stronks (video, 13:38)

Amy Wilson-Stronks, M.P.P. was Project Director for Health Disparities and Principal Investigator of the Hospitals, Language and Culture study at The Joint Commission in Oakbrook Terrace, IL. While at The Joint Commission, she guided the new and revised standards through their adoption and lead the development of the implementation guide. She is currently the Senior Director of Cultural Services for CulturaLink, Inc., a company designed to help organizations connect to multicultural communities. AWilson-Stronks@theculturalink.com

Richard Hurtig (video, 9:19)

Richard Hurtig, Ph.D. is Professor & Starch Faculty Fellow in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at the University of Iowa. He directs the University of Iowa Assistive Devices Laboratory that has developed a range of low to high tech AAC solutions for implementation the inpatient population. He has co-authored a text on implementing AAC in hospitals (Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Acute and Critical Care Settings., 2009, Plural Publishing). His current projects include deployment of eye tracking AAC systems in the intensive care setting and the use of AAC systems to allow patient-provider communication when the patient is not a speaker of English.

Paul Rao (video, 7:38)

Paul R. Rao, PhD, CCC, CPHQ, FACHE, Vice President, Clinical Services, Quality and Compliance at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in D.C. He currently serves as the 2011 President of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a 140,000 member organization headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. He is the Privacy Officer Liaison / HIPAA Coordinator at NRH, a Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland and as a member of the editorial board of Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation and Advance for Directors. Dr. Rao has authored numerous articles and chapters on topics such as Customer Service, Policy and Procedures, Supervision, Health Literacy and Management. He is also the primary editor of Managing Stroke: A Guide to Living Well after Stroke, published in 2000 by NRH Press.

Karin Ruschke (video, 9:33)

Karin Ruschke, MA, is founder and president of International Language Services, Inc, a full-service interpreting and translation company which offers the industry’s first all wireless high definition video remote interpreting to promote and enhance effective communication with the Deaf and limited English communities. Ms. Ruschke has played an integral role in raising national awareness of standards for healthcare interpreters. Serving as Co-chair of the Standards, Training and Certification (STC) committee of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) from 1999 – 2011, Ms. Ruschke was instrumental in developing and disseminating industry standards such as the National Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care and the National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs. She currently serves as the Vice-chair, Certification, Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), which is committed to developing and administering a national, valid, credible, vendor-neutral certification program for healthcare interpreters.

John Costello (video, 15:01)

John Costello is a speech-language pathologist and Director of the Augmentative Communication Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. In 1994 he established a dedicated inpatient augmentative communication program focused on supporting communication vulnerable patients in the intensive and acute care setting to more effectively communicate and participate in their own care. He has created and published a model for pre-operative message banking and is currently developing a message banking model to support persons with neurodegenerative conditions. John has lectured widely nationally and internationally on the topic of AAC in the Intensive and Acute Care Setting and has published several related papers.
